Rifle is young but showing promise

RIFLE – Considering the amount of playing time they saw last year, Rifle’s projected top players must be seasoned veterans. Not.Long-time assistant coach Jack Smith has taken over as the Bears head coach after Rick Schmitz’s retirement from the coaching fraternity.This year’s group consists primarily of underclassmen – very young but very talented underclassmen.Four returning lettermen are sophomores who are projected to see appreciable playing time this year. Four others vying for starting berths are juniors.Kendall Babler, who earned first team all-league honors as a freshman, is among the crop of talented sophs who helped the Bears to a 19-5 overall mark in 2004-05. Joining her are teammates Megan McWilliams, Alissa Skinner and Chelsea Webb.Guard Kristin Guettler is the lone junior with varsity experience. Classmates vying for spots are Courtney Vasten, Billie Blackwell, Lindsey Bowen and Kaylen Harrison.Veteran Lindsey McCue-Locke is one of two seniors out for the team along Katie Buchanan.

2004-05 Final Record: 19-5 (overall); 11-3 (second place, Class 4A, Western Slope League) Head Coach: Jack Smith (first year) 2004-05 Playoffs: Advanced to second round of 4A state playoffs. Lost 86-48 to Greeley West. Seniors Lost/Returning Starters: 4/1 First Game: Thursday, Dec. 1, at Basalt. League opener Jan. 6 vs. Eagle Valley
