Rifle loses flip; won’t receive bye

The coin was flipped and the Rifle softball team lost.Palisade won the Colorado High School Activities Association coin toss on Friday to receive a first-round bye in Saturday’s Class 4A District 8 tournament.While Palisade and Rifle tied as Western Slope League Champions, they also shared a 1-1 season record in games against each other, leaving the decision of who was to get the No. 1 seed and a bye to a coin toss.As a result, No. 2 Rifle (7-1 WSL) will face No. 3 Delta (3-5 WSL) in the first round, to be played at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. The winner of the Delta-Rifle showdown will then play the Southwestern League Champion Montezuma-Cortez, which, like Palisade, received a first-round bye.Palisade will play the winner of the other 9:30 a.m. matchup between Montrose, the SWL’s No. 2, and WSL’s No. 4 seed Eagle Valley (2-6 WSL.)With six teams playing in the single-elimination tournament, it will take three victories for Rifle to walk out with a title. The championship game will take place at 3:30 p.m.The champion and the runner-up from the district tournament advance to the regional tournament on Oct. 20.
