Rifle places well in Vernal wrestling tournament

The Rifle wrestling team took on some of the top teams from Colorado, Utah and Wyoming and took sixth place as a team at the annual Vernal, Utah, wrestling tournament this weekend.The finish was four places higher than Rifle’s finish last year.”I thought we could have placed even higher, but it was quite an improvement from last year,” said Rifle head coach John Wisniewski. “We lost some really close matches I thought we could have won, but overall I was really pleased.”Bears James Conrardy and Tyler Thompson each took runner-up titles at the tournament. James Martinez, who knocked out the tourney’s No. 1-seeded wrestler in one of the earlier rounds, went on to finish third.Tim Long, in his first action back since knee surgery, placed fourth.”It didn’t even look like he’d been out for three weeks,” said Wisniewski of Long’s performance in his early rounds.Tad Davis finished fifth, Derek Fruetel took seventh and Mario Navarro and Kyle Coombs each finished eighth.Rifle will be back on the mats on Thursday to host Battle Mountain at 6 p.m., and then will host the Rifle Invitational Rumble in the Rockies on Saturday.
