Rifle rises two spots in RMN poll

Staff Report

The Rifle football team’s 35-14 upset victory over previously No. 1-ranked Palisade Friday didn’t catapult the Bears up in the state Class 3A rankings, but it did cause the Bulldogs to fall precipitously.

Rifle (3-1) gained two spots in the Rocky Mountain News rankings, moving up to No. 7, while Palisade (3-1) dropped to No. 8. In the Denver Post/9News poll, the Bears still aren’t among the state’s top 10, and Palisade is now ranked third in the state.

Mountain View and Fountain-Fort Carson are ranked one and two, respectively in both polls. Other Western Slope Conference schools to receive top-10 rankings include Steamboat Springs (4-0, No. 4 RMN poll), and Moffat County (3-1, No. 10 DP/9News poll).

In Class 2A football, Roaring Fork (4-0) held on for a 21-20 victory over unheralded Hotchkiss and remains No. 6 in the RMN poll. The Rams are ranked third in the state by the Denver Post. Denver Christian and Eaton, both undefeated on the season, are in the top two spots in both polls. Two other Western Slope teams earned top-10 rankings in Eagle Valley (3-1, No. 10 RMN, No. 7 DP/9News) and Gunnison (3-1, No. 9 DP/9News).

In Class 4A volleyball, the undefeated Glenwood Springs Demons (10-0) maintained their grip on the third spot in the state. The Demons continue to trail top-ranked Lewis-Palmer (10-0) and No. 2 Brighton (11-0).

The only area boys soccer team to receive a ranking this week is Class 3A Basalt (5-2), which stayed at No. 9.

The Alpine Christian girls cross country team also maintained its ranking, sticking at No. 4.
