Rifle smokes Bulldogs, finishes No. 2 in WSL

Rifle’s offense showed up and its defense shutdown the Moffat County Bulldogs on Friday night in Craig, defeating the Class 3A Western Slope League foe in both teams’ season finale.Rifle ended its regular season with only one loss in the league. Unfortunately for the Bears (7-3 overall, 7-1 WSL), that loss came to Steamboat (9-1, 7-1) and Rifle will take the No. 2 spot in the WSL.

After Steamboat’s 39-12 victory over Battle Mountain on Friday night, the Sailors clinched the league championship.Rifle’s seed will be good enough for a home game against the North Metro League’s No. 3 team Elizabeth (4-6 overall), just like the first round in last years playoffs, next weekend. The Colorado High School Activities Association will release the Class 3A bracket on Sunday.Rifle, who’s ranked No. 8 in state according to RockyPreps, and Moffat County (5-5, 4-4) both jumped onto the board early, tying the score at 7 in the first quarter. The Bears’ offense then got rolling, reaching the end zone two more times, going up 21-7.

The Bulldogs struck next, but Rifle kicked a field goal to take a 24-14 lead at the half.In the second half, the Bears buried any thoughts of a Bulldog upset, scoring two touchdowns and going up 38-14. Rife stood its ground in the final minutes to hold onto
