Rifle squeeks out win over Palisade

GRAND JUNCTION ” Rifle used a five-run fifth inning to pull ahead of league foe Palisade on Tuesday, then got a game-saving double play in the seventh inning from relief pitcher Brandon Leuallen to preserve the 8-7 win.

The Bears (3-4 overall, 1-2 WSL) took an 8-4 lead in the fifth on a bases-loaded walker issued to Bryce Enewold, followed by run-scoring basehits from Eli Snead and Lueallen after trailing 4-3.

With Palisade threating in the seventh, Leuallen’s leaping grab of a high ground ball back to the mound started a double play to get Rifle out of the jam.

Snead lead Rifle’s nine-hit attack with three hits in four at bats.

Adam Krick added two hits. Leuallen and Kip Jessup had two RBI’s each.

The Bears take on three nonleague opponents in Denver this weekend, starting with Friday’s contest at Skyline High School in Longmont.

The road trip concludes Saturday with games against Thomas Jefferson and George Washington of the Denver Prep League at All-City Stadium.
