The hitting slump that’s pestered Rifle’s softball team throughout the 2004 season appears to be over.On Friday, the Bears pounded out 22 hits (11 each game) in a league doubleheader win over Montezuma-Cortez at Deerfield Park in North Rifle.Bridget Peters was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI’s in the Bears’ 8-3 game one victory against the visiting Panthers.Additional offense was provided by catcher Lindsey McCue-Locke and her batterymate Alissa Skinner. Each had two hits in the contest. Skinner, Rifle’s starting pitcher, hurled a complete game three-hitter then came back to record her second win of the day in the 10-6 nightcap.McCue-Locke banged out two more hits in the second game. Peters added two singles with two RBI’s. Megan McWilliams had two singles. Trisha McDowell scored three runs.Against non-league Durango Saturday, Rifle continued to pound the ball.The Bears, who upped their record to 5-8 (2-2 league) on the 10-0 shutout win over the Southwestern League Demons, smashed out seven hits in a five-inning game shortened by the 10-run mercy rule.McWilliams, Rifle’s pitcher against Durango, was 2-for-4 in the contest, including a double and two RBI’s. On the mound, the freshman twirled a one-hitter in recording her second victory of the season.The Bears are off until Friday when they resume league play with a doubleheader at Delta.VOLLEYBALLFresh off their stunning upset of Glenwood Springs, Palisade continued to round up area volleyball teams this weekend.Winless Rifle was the lastest victim to fold to the Class 4A Western Slope League Bulldogs.Led by Kaity Edmiston’s 13 kills and the point-scoring prowess of Jessica Hellman (18 points) and Jessica Appling (11 points), Palisade handed a 3-0 (25-10, 25-9, 25-6) loss to Rifle on Saturday.The loss drops Rifle’s record to 0-7 (0-5 league).On Tuesday, Rifle faces Montrose from the Southwestern League at home, next travels to Eagle Valley on Thursday, then wraps up the week Saturday with a road league match at Battle Mountain.In Class 3A action, Basalt suffered a 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-22) sweep at Gunnison on Saturday.Jessica Barnes scored 11 points and had five service aces in the loss. Cassie Meyer added six blocks.The Longhorns are 7-3 overall and 2-3 in the WSLafter the loss.They take on Olathe Friday at home.Grand Valley fell to North Park, 3-0, Saturday. The Cardinals are 5-6 on the year.
