CORTEZ – It’s safe to call Rifle’s Shawn Cruse a pressure player. The senior gutted out a three-hole, sudden-death playoff with Montezuma-Cortez freshman Brian Grubbs to win Thursday’s Western Regional golf tournament at Cortez’s Conquistador Golf Course.

And now on to state for the veteran Bear, who shot a par 72 in regulation. Cruse is the lone local individual state qualifier, though Basalt is headed as a team to the Oct. 1-2 state meet at Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield. The Longhorns claimed the regional team title with a team score of 227, receiving scoring rounds from Connor Rakowski with a 73, Jim Knous with a 74 and Marty Knous with an 80.

Steamboat Springs finished second at 230 and will join Basalt as the only other Western Slope team state qualifier.State will consist of a 36-hole tournament, with a team championship and the first through 10th individuals receiving medals.

As a team, Cruse and Rifle finished seventh. Alex Haynes (84) and Eric Copen (89) had scoring marks in addition to Cruse for the Bears, who shot a collective 245. Glenwood finished 12th overall with a 277 behind an 87 from Jason Whiting, a 91 from D.J. Pelland and a 93 from Kelby Artaz. Micah Evanitz (88) and Max Frank (92) led Roaring Fork to a 14th-place finish at 280, while Craig Spaulding (92) paced Coal Ridge to 17th place at 285 and Kaleb Bell (93) and Kasey Diaz (93) led Grand Valley to 18th at 287.
