Rivalries flavor busy sports week

This week has got rivalry written all over it.There will be some of the most exciting games of the year with Glenwood and Rifle going at it in football and soccer, Glenwood at Roaring Fork taking the court in volleyball and Coal Ridge and Rifle matching up in soccer. Also, boys golf will be the first fall sport to hit the postseason as area teams flock to Cortez for regionals.Here’s a look at what not to miss in prep sports this week:

Soccer – Glenwood Springs at Rifle, 4 p.m.Volleyball – Glenwood Springs at Roaring Fork, 6 p.m.

Soccer – Coal Ridge at Rifle, 4 p.m.Golf – Area teams at regionals in Cortez.Volleyball – Steamboat Springs at Glenwood Springs, 6:30 p.m.

Football – Rifle at Glenwood Springs, 7 p.m. (the classic rivalry); Meeker at Grand Valley, 7:30 p.m. (These two teams were at the top of the Class 1A Western Slope League last year.)Volleyball – Coal Ridge at Olathe, 5:30 p.m. (These two teams traded punches in a five-game thriller at the Titans’ house earlier in the year.)

Cross Country – Glenwood, Rifle and Coal Ridge at Battle Mountain, one of the best teams on the Western Slope. A good altitude run.Soccer – Coal Ridge at Roaring Fork, 11 a.m.
