Rivalry game highlights opening weekend
Staff ReportAfter being relatively dormant for the past few months, high school football fans will fill the stands as area fields light up tonight.All five area grid squads open the season with nonconference games tonight. The Roaring Fork-Glenwood Springs contest highlights the action.The valley rivalry game, slated for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Roaring Fork High School, is the first for new Demons head coach Rocky Whitworth, who led the Rams to a state title in 1977.It will be the first opportunity for Glenwood fans to see what new wrinkles Whitworth brings to the Class 3A Demons. For Roaring Fork fans, it offers a chance to see if the team, hit hard by graduation, can maintain the momentum it gained by reaching the Class 2A state semifinals last season.The Rifle Bears, expected to be one of the top teams in the Class 3A Western Slope Conference this year, open their season against Harrison of the Colorado Springs Metro league. The contest is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. at the Bear Lair.The Class 2A Basalt Longhorns won three games last season, the most since restarting their varsity program in the late 1990s, and host Class 1A Meeker at home at 7 p.m.Class 1A Grand Valley will play up a classification in its opener, with a road game against Class 2A Hotchkiss at 7 p.m.Class 1A Grand Valley will play up a classification in its opener, with a road game against Class 2A Hotchkiss at 7 p.m.
