Roaring Fork petitions for postseason eligibility

CARBONDALE, Colorado ” Roaring Fork High School is taking the steps necessary to make its boys soccer team eligible for the postseason.

The Rams were placed on restriction by the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) after head coach John Ackerman pulled his team off the field with 30 minutes remaining in a contest at Aspen on Sept. 23.

With restriction comes the revocation of postseason eligibility, and Roaring Fork is petitioning CHSAA to lift the penalty by imposing a three-game suspension on its second-year boys soccer coach.

Ackerman confirmed on Thursday that he would be sitting out that afternoon’s game at Vail Mountain School, as well as his today’s regular-season finale versus Moffat County and Roaring Fork’s playoff opener should the team advance to the postseason.

Ackerman also sent a letter to CHSAA, the governing body for Colorado high school sports, explaining his actions. The coach seemed to think the measures would be enough to lift the restriction.

Entering Thursday’s league finale at Vail Mountain, Ackerman’s Rams were locked into the fourth spot in Region 7. The top four teams in the circuit qualify for the 32-team Class 3A state playoffs.

Ackerman declined to comment on the specifics or reasoning behind his decision to pull his team from the pitch.

“It’s a thing we have to take care of internally,” he said.

In Ackerman’s absence, assistant Hadley Hentschel will handle the head coaching duties.
