Sedgwick County claims 2A title

PUEBLO ” The eighth-seeded team that knocked the Grand Valley boys basketball team out of the playoffs in the first round of the Class 2A state tournament is the team that wound up winning it all.

Sedgwick County, which beat the defending state champion Cardinals 41-39 in Thursday’s quarterfinal, knocked off the Western Slope League’s Paonia 43-28 in Saturday’s championship game at Colorado State University-Pueblo.

Fully embracing the underdog role, the Cougars ran off three straight wins at the perfect time to finish their season 21-5. After beating top-seeded Grand Valley, they knocked off No. 5 Calhan in the semis to reach the final.
