Shockley sparks Bobcats to victory over Rams in state quarters

Todd Hampton

FORT COLLINS – Roaring Fork girls basketball coach Kirk Cheney said before the game that Class 3A player of the year Dawn Shockley couldn’t beat the Rams alone. He may have to rethink that. The Estes Park Bobcats had four other girls on the floor at all times, but it was Shockley with 35 points who did most of the damage in the Rams’ 45-40 defeat. The loss sends the Rams to the consolation bracket of the 3A State Tournament for the second straight season. Roaring Fork meets Colorado Springs Christian at 1:15 p.m. Friday, again in Moby Gym.”She made a believer out of me,” Cheney said moments after a draining loss that saw the Rams, trailing by one at 41-40 force a turnover with 34 seconds to play. But the Rams committed turnovers of their own, and Shockley scored the game’s final four points.Cheney admitted that every coach in attendance would like to have Shockley on his team, but he also praised the Rams’ performance. Laura Wright led the Rams with 14 points, while Whitney Campbell added 12.”I thought we had them,” Cheney said, citing the Rams’ 21-15 halftime lead, created in part by a tough 2-1-2 zone defense that pushed the Bobcats out beyond the arc and held Estes Park scoreless through the first four minutes of the second quarter.”Our girls played hard in a tough loss,” Cheney said. “We’ll just have to regroup and come back tomorrow.”
