Shortcut racesready to take off

Drivers beware. Runners of all ages, sizes and abilities will take to the streets of Glenwood Springs early this morning for the 27th annual Strawberry Shortcut 5- and 10-kilometer races and 1-mile fun run.Race organizer Jim Yellico said more than 500 had registered as of Friday, but expects over 900 participants to line up at the starting line for one or more of today’s three events.Races begin at 7:30 a.m. with the 10K run, followed by the 5K at 8:45 a.m. The 1-mile fun run is scheduled to take off at 9:45 a.m.Both the 5K and 10K races start from Centennial Park at 9th and Grand Avenue, then continue across the Grand Avenue bridge.After crossing the bridge, the 5K route wanders through north Glenwood, crossing over Interstate 70 on Devereux Road. Runners go through Two Rivers Park and along the Roaring Fork River trail to 7th Street, then south to 13th Street before finishing under Grand Avenue Bridge across from the railroad depot.The 10K race follows the same route to Two Rivers Park but goes further west on Devereux Road before returning on Midland Avenue. The 10K course meets up with the 5K course on 7th Street, heading south to 13th Street before finishing under Grand Avenue Bridge . The fun run starts and finishes under the Grand Avenue bridge.Registrations for any of the runs will be accepted up to the start of the 10K race. A booth will open at 6 a.m. this morning in Centennial Park for additional participants.The per-person entry fee is $25 for either the 5K or 10K and $29 for both. The fun run is $23, or free with the paid entry for any other race. The family entry cost is $55.Entry fees include a free race T-shirt. Additional prizes, donated by area businesses and worth well over $1,000, will be doled out following the event.The Shortcut, through monies raised by entry fees and donations, benefits the Colorado Special Olympics.The event is the second leg of the Charity Race Series, which includes the Mother’s Day Mile, held on May 9, Citizen’s Fun Run, scheduled for Oct. 2 and the Canyon Shuffle 5K and half-marathon on Oct. 9.The event is the second leg of the Charity Race Series, which includes the Mother’s Day Mile, held on May 9, Citizen’s Fun Run, scheduled for Oct. 2 and the Canyon Shuffle 5K and half-marathon on Oct. 9.
