Sign of season: Preps set to scrimmage

Tired of waiting for the fall prep season to end? Then head over to the closest high school football field or gym this weekend.Starting this afternoon, area prep football and volleyball teams are scheduled to participate in scrimmages against other schools.And the best part for fans of either sport is you can’t beat the cost. Normally, scrimmages are free.At 4 p.m. this afternoon, Glenwood Springs High’s practice field has a four-team football scrimmage on tap involving the host Demons, perennial Class 2A Western Slope powerhouse Hotchkiss along with fellow 2A WSC schools Basalt and Coal Ridge.Also at 4 p.m. today, a very attractive football scrimmage brings together five preseason Rocky Preps Top 10 schools at Eagle Valley High School in Gypsum. Rifle, ranked No. 4 in the initial Class 3A state poll, pits its talents against No. 1 Alamosa from the 3A North Metro Conference, host Eagle Valley, ranked 10th, plus Class 2A ranked No. 3 Roaring Fork and No. 10 Buena Vista.Grand Valley scrimmages Fruita Monument and Moffat County’s junior varsity teams at 10 a.m. Saturday in Fruita.Four prep volleyball teams take to the courts at Coal Ridge High at 9 a.m. Saturday for a full day of scrimmage action. Along with the host Titans, area schools Glenwood and Rifle are involved along with Rangely.Roaring Fork travels to Eagle Valley for a test of its skills against the Class 4A Devils plus Vail Christian and Vail Mountain School. That multi-team scrimmage is slated for 9 a.m.
