Skiing sensations: McKennis, Sakson impress on huge stages

One landed on the U.S. Ski Team women’s developmental squad. The other is a serious telemarker.

New Castle downhiller Alice McKennis and Carbondale telemarker Jake Sakson delivered on big skiing stages in 2008.

McKennis raked in four December golds in super G and downhill Nor-Am Cup races to make quite the splash, while Sakson snared third overall at the late-March World Telemark Freeskiing Championships at Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, Alaska.

Neither are pedestrian feats.

McKennis, who one day hopes to ski the World Cup series, has been skiing since she was barely able to walk and has dedicated most of her 19 years to the sport.

Such an amazing December left her floored.

“I’m so excited. It’s really a great feeling,” McKennis said. “You work your whole life and being able to win this many times is amazing.”
