Smith captures All-State kudos

The postseason honors keep rolling in for the Glenwood Springs High School soccer team.

Glenwood, which fell to Mullen in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs, had one player, Ross Smith, voted onto the Class 4A All-State second team, while forward Derek Weller and midfielder Ian Lochhead received honorable mentions.

Smith finished 14th in the coaches’ voting, just a few spots shy of a first-team selection.

“Fourteen out of 1,400 – I think that’s a great honor in itself,” Glenwood coach Bob Guska said.

The senior striker ended the 2002 campaign as the high goal scorer in the Western Slope League with 17 goals. The total was good for fourth in the state’s Class 4A

Weller was the other half of the offensive attack for the Demons this season. The junior forward posted 12 goals, second only to Smith in the WSL and tied for 15th in the state.

Lochhead, a senior, was the team’s top playmaker from the midfield, but also had a nose for the net. The highlight of the season came in the regional playoff game against Brighton. Lochhead posted three goals and an assist in the first half to lead the Demons to a 4-1 victory at Stubler Memorial Field. He finished the season with nine goals and 11 assists to lead the team in points.

Other WSL players to make the All-State list are Steamboat’s Mike Holland (second team) and Kyle Nelson (honorable mention).
