Name: Chelsea VallarioBirthdate: October 14, 1989.Year in school: Junior, Glenwood Springs High SchoolSports played: Soccer, volleyball and basketball. What’s your favorite sport? Probably soccer and volleyball. They’re just different. I’d say it’s a tie. What do you like to do besides playing sports? In the summer I also ride my horse for the rodeo. Other than that, rafting and water stuff. It’s great living here.

Where do you go rafting? From Shoshone down to my house at Canyon Creek.Favorite movie: I’m a really big fan of the Jungle Book, actually.Favorite kind of music: That’s a toughie. I listen to everything. I can’t answer. How long have you been playing soccer? Since I was 3. My dad was coaching for my sister’s team, so I played with their team when I was little. What’s your favorite position in soccer? Definitely forward. I used to split it when I was little until about seventh grade. I used to play half goalie and half forward, so I got the best of both worlds there. I think it actually helped me on shots more, because I’ve been a goalie and I can read them. What’s your favorite school to play against? Steamboat. I really like playing against Steamboat. We just pick up our level of play every time. It’s such a fun, intense game. It doesn’t matter what season, who’s playing, who graduated. It’s always going to be an exciting game.

Favorite subject in school: Probably science, things like that. What do you want to major in after high school? I was thinking about doing physical therapy or something like that. That’s kind of where I’m going so far, but I’m not sure yet.Where do you want to go to college? I went on spring break and looked at schools in Florida and I’d really like to go the University of Florida. So I’m going to try for that. You like the Gators? Yeah, all the way. What’s your favorite high school moment so far? Our Steamboat game, actually. Our freshman year we beat Steamboat, or maybe last year. It all runs together. It was the first time we beat Steamboat and they were undefeated for seven years I think, so it was a big moment for us. To play with those seniors, it was amazing to be able to experience that.Favorite professional sports team: I’m not a very big pro sports watcher, actually. I guess I don’t really know.

Favorite athlete: Not really into the pros or anything like that. I don’t really like to think about things like that. I worry about my own team and things that I can be a part of.What’s it like being a sheriff’s daughter? It has its advantages and disadvantages. I don’t mind it. I get asked that question all the time. I love my dad and his job is his job and mine as a daughter is mine. We definitely get along well and it doesn’t bother me at all. I don’t feel like it limits me in any way.Note: Chelsea is the daughter of Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario. What’s the best vacation you’ve ever been on? My family and I try to go on vacation to another country every other year. I think we’ve been to nine different countries. We’ve been to Australia. We went to Cozumel and all over the place. So any of those, I guess.Sports Spotlight is a biweekly feature of the Post Independent. Have an idea for a good Sports Spotlight subject? E-mail sports@postindependent.com or call 384-9125.
