Soccer Demons beat up on Summit, now 2-0

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado – Travis Whitman had a hat trick and Hunter Brown, Danny Weller and Jovany Mendez all scored goals as Glenwood Springs pummeled visiting Summit 6-0 in boys soccer play on Saturday.

Whitman, Mike McGraw and Clay Hawkins each had assists for the Demons, who took a 3-0 lead into halftime and never looked back.

There was one bit of bad news for Glenwood, though, as Whitman had to be helped off the field after hurting his knee. Demons coach John Mount wasn’t sure of the extent of the injury in the moments immediately after the game.

FORT COLLINS, Colorado – Local runners made the most of a chance to test out Colorado’s state meet course at Saturday’s Pre-State Cross Country Invitational.

Rifle and Glenwood’s cross country teams made the trek to Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins, where more than 80 teams from throughout the state previewed the course they hope to return to for the Oct. 31 state meet.

Rifle’s boys finished 13th overall out of more than 30 Class 4A squads.

The Bears were led by Dustin Ross, whose time of 17.51.5 landed him 35th place. Geo Mendez wasn’t far behind, claiming 42nd place with a time of 17:58.7. Ryan Davis was 61st (18:23.7).

Leading the Demons in Fort Collins was Ryan Buchanan, who clocked in at 17:26.6 to take 21st place in the boys race.

Lily Thorsen led Glenwood’s girls, timing in at 21:32.6 and finishing in 39th place. Sarah Treese took 43rd with a time of 21:38.9.

Rifle’s girls raced in Delta on Saturday. Ashton Wilcox led the Bears there, taking 36th place with a time of 24:05.

HOTCHKISS, Colorado – Roaring Fork’s volleyball team made the long haul to Hotchkiss and defeated the Bulldogs in four on Friday.

The Rams, who were led by Landon Garvik’s 13 kills, won by game counts of 15-25, 25-12, 25-23 and 25-14. Joey Clingan distributed 19 assists for Roaring Fork, now 2-0. Savanna Phibbs led the team with 12 digs.

PARACHUTE, Colorado – The home Cardinals went 1-2 at Saturday’s Grand Valley Invitational volleyball tournament.

Grand Valley dispatched of Telluride in four games and lost to North Park and Vail Christian en route to a fifth-place finish in the six-team tournament.

The Cardinals’ Karmen Steimel was named to the all-tournament team.

LEADVILLE, Colorado – Rifle’s volleyball team pieced together a 1-2 record at Saturday’s Lake County Invitational.

The Bears beat Lake County 2-0 and lost to Nederland (1-2) and James Irwin (2-0) to kick off their season.

Lauren Potter averaged 15 assists a match for Rifle. Bri Bascom finished with 20 kills on the day.
