Soccer: Palisade upsets Demons in double OT

A dramatic Glenwood Springs comeback was thwarted in the second overtime Saturday when Palisade stunned the Demons 4-3 in high school soccer.

Playing on the road, Glenwood Springs fell behind 2-0 in the first half when Palisade’s Heather Yutzy scored in the eighth minute and the 21st minute.

Then in the opening minute of the second half, Palisade scored again and Melissa Thate gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.

But the league-leading Demons stormed back with a goal from Ella McReynolds, off a pass from Heather Hert, and an unassisted goal by Cassie Carlson.

Trailing still 3-2, the Demons forced overtime when Ashley Holtum took a pass from Chelsea Strautman with one minute remaining in regulation. Holtum hit the net to tie the match.

The first five-minute overtime went scoreless.

The second OT also was scoreless until the Demons were whistled for a foul, giving Palisade a direct kick from directly in front of the goal, about 30 meters out.

Kendra Nash ripped the high shot that went just under the crossbar and into the net for a 4-3 Palisade win in double overtime.

The loss was the first 4A Western Slope League defeat for the Demons, not 5-1-0 in conference play. The Demons are 7-2-0 overall.

Palisade is 3-2-0 in league play and 4-6-0 overall.

Glenwood Springs will play next at Battle Mountain on Thursday afternoon.
