Before the kickoff of Super Bowl LI in Houston, Fox aired a patriotic commercial honoring the American flag that featured Johnny Cash’s “Ragged Old Flag.”

The spot was  introduced by U.S. Olympic gymnast Simone Biles and singer Harry Belafonte, but it also had a local feel as former Marine Sgt. Kirstie Ennis was featured alongside Nate Boyer, a former Green Beret and long snapper for the Seattle Seahawks.

In September, the Post Independent published a story on Ennis’s remarkable journey to the valley. In 2o12, she was shot down in Afghanistan and eventually would lose her left leg. She’s endured  more than 40 surgeries, but was able to pick up snowboarding quickly, eventually becoming a member of the U.S. Paralympic Team.

Through snowboarding, Ennis found her way to the valley, along with the help of Building Homes for Heroes, a nonprofit organization that provides homes for wounded military veterans and their families.

In November, Building Homes for Heroes, along with Ennis, broke ground on the her new home in Ironbridge, just south of Glenwood Springs. It is to be completed in the spring.

If you missed the original airing of the commercial, here’s a behind-the-scenes clip of the filming, along with interviews with Ennis and Boyer.
