GLENWOOD SPRINGS — Team Sopris, the local club swim team for kids ages 5 and up, recently competed at Rocky Mountain State Games, held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs from July 5 to 7.
“The swimmers always get excited to compete at the OTC,” Team Sopris coach Damon Garrison said. “We swam fairly well considering we are at the peak of our training and putting in a lot of yardage at practice right now.”
Lauren Jean Fetzko swam her first Western Sectionals qualifying in the 1,500-meter, long-course freestyle. Kaitlyn Vanderhoof qualified for the State Championship meet later this month with a 50-meter freestyle lead-off swim in the girls 200 freestyle relay.
Aside from numerous top-three finishes, the swimmers enjoyed competing in the same pool where many of their swimming idols train.
Sally McDonnell, an 11-year-old swimmer who commutes from Eagle to swim with Team Sopris in Glenwood Springs, said: “Going to and swimming at the Olympic Training Center was an amazing experience! I think that it was very inspiring to swim in a place where Olympic athletes have trained. I even took a small bottle of water from the pool as a reminder.
“I really hope to swim there again,” she continued.
Championship season for Team Sopris begins July 19 to 21 with the Western Slope Championship meet at the El Pomar Natatorium in Grand Junction, followed by Long Course State Championships, also at the Colorado Mesa University pool, from July 26 to 28. Qualifying senior Team Sopris swimmers will travel to Fresno, Calif., to compete in the Western Zones Senior Championships meet from July 31 to Aug. 4.
