The Carbondale Recreation Department is accepting registrations for Start Smart Soccer. This introductory soccer program for ages 3-4 will be held on Monday and Wednesdays, May 7-23, from 3:30-4:15 p.m. at Miners Park. The cost is $40. The registration deadline is today.

Alder Park in New Castle will play host to the Mr. T’s Youth Fishing Derby on April 28.

Ages 9 and under will tackle the waters from 2-3:30 p.m., while 10- to 15-year-olds go from 3:30-5 p.m.

This is a free event open to 50 participants in each age group. Register at town hall or at the New Castle Community Center.

The Carbondale Recreation Department is accepting registrations for the summer youth baseball and softball leagues. This is for ages 7 and up. The cost for the coach pitch league is $55 plus a $25 uniform deposit, while the cost for the baseball and softball league is $60 plus a $25 uniform deposit. The registration deadline is Friday, May 4.

Coal Ridge High School will play host to the May 5 New Castle Gladiator Wrestling Tournament.

Age divisions range from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade. The cost is $15 per wrestler for pre-registration, $20 to sign up on the day of the tournament and $25 for each additional bracket. Spectators 4 years and older are $3 apiece.

Four-time Division 1 national college champion and 2004 Olympic gold medalist Cael Sanderson will make a guest appearance and give a 12-12:45 p.m. clinic. He will also be signing autographs off and on throughout the day and will hand out awards.

The first-ever Rocky Mountain Baseball Instructional League will be held Monday through Friday (5:30-7 p.m.) May 7-25 at the Deerfield Complex in Rifle.

The three-week instructional camp will include game action and will replace the one-week camp that has taken place the first week of June in the past. Rifle High School coach Troy Phillips, his assistant coaches and players will run the league.

Sign-ups are slated for May 2 from 3:30-6 at Rifle High in the commons area and the cost is $75. Sign-ups can also be done the first day of the instructional league. Flyers are available at the Rifle Recreation Department.

The Basalt Soccer Club will be holding its advance team try-outs on the following dates: May 7: 3:30-5:30 p.m. for incoming U11-U12 girls and 5:30-7:30 p.m. for U13-and-up girls; May 8: 3:30-5:30 p.m. for incoming U11-U12 boys and 5:30-7:30 p.m. for U13-and-up boys.

Make-up dates will be: May 14: 3:30-5:30 p.m. for incoming U11-U12 boys and 5:30-7:30 p.m. for U13-and-up boys; May 15: 3:30-5:30 p.m. for incoming U11-U12 girls and 5:30-7:30 p.m. for U13-and-up girls.

Fall registration deadline is June 15, 2007. Registration postmarked after that date will be returned.

The 28th annual Vivian Raymond Memorial Golf Tournament is slated for Friday, May 11, at Rifle Creek Golf Course.

Registration for the scramble tournament, which kicks off with a 9 a.m. shotgun start, is $50 per person. The entry deadline is May 4. Registration forms are available at the Rifle Area Chamber of Commerce office (200 Lions Park Circle).

The Basalt Recreation Department is accepting registration for its summer recreational baseball and softball league.

Teams are forming in coach pitch (ages 7-8) for boys and girls and kid pitch (ages 8-10, 11-12, 13-15) for baseball and softball.

Registration is $65 and each participant gets a hat and jersey to keep. Register by May 11. Practices begin June 4 and the season starts in July.
