State tourney over for Demons netters

The Demons’ tennis season ended in a hurry Thursday. Both Glenwood Springs High School state qualifiers, Roni St. Pierre and Caitlyn Fowler, fell in their opening matches at the Class 4A state tournament in Pueblo. The two players who beat the Demons lost in the second round, ending any chance for a Glenwood playback. At No. 2 singles, Pueblo South sophomore Annie Housman downed St. Pierre 6-2, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, Housman fell 6-2, 6-2 to Cayley Wetzig of Cheyenne Mountain, knocking St. Pierre from the tourney. At No. 3 singles, Fowler suffered a similar fate.Fowler, a sophomore, fell 6-3, 6-1 to Kent Denver’s Lindsey Kucera. Then, in an odd twist of fate, Kara Kochenberger of Pueblo Central downed Kucera 7-5, 6-3 to eliminate Fowler. Kochenberger is the niece of Glenwood Springs athletic director Steve Cable, according to Glenwood coach Phyllis Zilm.”Roni hit the ball as well as I’ve seen her hit the ball (this season),” Zilm said. “And Caitlyn actually played a closer match than the score. Most of her games went deuce.”They both played really some of the best tennis I’ve seen all year.”And, of course, it’s nice for Zilm that it’s not the final prep match for either player.”The girls are rarin’ to go for next year,” Zilm said. “I think they will be back.”
