Storm wipes out first weekend of spring sports

Want snow in Colorado? Simple – schedule a high school spring sports contest and the white stuff will follow.Friday’s winter blast forced postponement and/or cancellations of the first weekend of high school girls soccer, tennis, baseball and track meets scheduled across the Western Slope.The first event to be erased from the schedule board was Friday’s Rifle-Grand Junction girls soccer game at Canyon View Park in Grand Junction. A new date has yet to be announced.Saturday postponements awaiting new playing dates include the Coal Ridge at Rifle junior varsity baseball doubleheader and the back-half of a girls tennis doubleheader featuring Durango against Roaring Fork. The fate of the Glenwood-Durango match on local Glenwood tennis courts will be decided this morning.Another late scratch, due to wet field conditions, was Rifle’s varsity baseball season opener at Montrose. That nonleague doubleheader between the Bears and Indians is scheduled for March 24 at 4 and 6 p.m.The prep track and field season also has been set back due to weather. The Mickey Dunn Invitational meet at Grand Junction’s Stocker Stadium, normally the season-opener for most of the Western Slope, has been moved to Saturday, March 25.
