Streak continues for Rifle’s Hughes

GRAND JUNCTION ” Jenny Hughes is in the zone, golf-wise. For the second straight day, the Rifle High School senior finished among the top 10 players on the prep girls Western Slope golf tour.

Competing in Tuesday’s Palisade Invitational at the Lincoln Park Golf Course, Hughes completed the 18-hole tournament with an 88. The score put her in sixth place in the individual standings.

Jessica McKay of Fruita Monument High School, in winning her fourth straight tournament of the 2004 season, carded a individual best round of 78, six strokes better than runner-up Melissa Rupp of Palisade’s 84.



Durango’s Melissa Vandiver and Emma Watson of Cedaredge tied for third with identical rounds of 85, followed by Megan Vogel of Grand Junction’s 87.

As a team, Rifle shot a combined score of 315 to finish sixth in the nine-team tournament. Fruita also won the team championship with a 261, besting second place Durango by 18 strokes.



On Monday at the Wildcat Invitational at Adobe Creek Golf Course in Fruita, Hughes took fourth place with a 90.

The next stop for area girls golf teams will be the Glenwood Springs Golf Course in West Glenwood for the Demon Invitational on April 5.
