Strickland sweeps Ski Spree events

Don Strickland had a need for speed Sunday, and he filled that need in two Ski Spree events at Sunlight Mountain Resort.

Strickland won the “Need for Speed” contest, then took top honors in the dual slalom race.

The 39-year-old Glenwood Springs resident clocked in at 73 miles per hour for the fastest speed, edging Carbondale 15-year-old Scot McBrayer by 2 mph.

Wendy Wampler was the fastest female at 67 mph, while Silt’s Dylan Cox, 17, won the snowboarding class with a top speed of 63 mph.

Kevin Campbell, 11, hit 57 mph for the fastest under-13 time and Kalin Bontrager won the edgy-wedgy class.

In the dual slalom, Strickland posted a two-run time of 27.1 seconds for the event crown. Terry Bannon of Carbondale and Andy Hawes of Rifle were second and third with times of 29.23 and 29.6, respectively.
