Sutherland named all-American

Amber Sutherland became one of the best prep players in Colorado in her four-year volleyball career at Glenwood Springs High School.

The Demon senior’s play in the recently completed 2003 season placed her among the top high school players in the United States, according to a national Web site.

Recently, the all-Colorado selection, was named among the top 100 players in the county by PrepVolleyball.com.

Sutherland, who received a full athletic scholarship to play volleyball at the University of Colorado, is one of three Colorado preps to make the list.

While leading Glenwood to the Class 4A state semifinals and a 29-1 overall record, Sutherland was among the state’s leaders in kills and blocks.

The other Colorado preps named to the all-American list were Tara Hittle from Colorado Springs Doherty High School and Highlands Ranch’s Kari Klinkenborg.

Doherty and Highlands Ranch are Class 5A schools.

Along with earning a spot on the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News 2003 all-state teams, Sutherland was a Class 4A, first-team selection by both Denver newspapers and was named the 4A Western Slope League Most Valuable Player.

The all-American team selections, according to PrepVolleyball.com director John Tawa, is based solely on high school play in the 2003 season.

California led all states in selections with 13 players. Ohio had 10 players voted to the squad.

Illinois followed with eight players named. Indiana and Florida had seven selections each, Nebraska had six players.

Texas, Minnesota came in with five choices each.
