Team Sopris swims strong at Pioneer Open

Team Sopris swim coach Damon Garrison called it a satisfying meet.

The local club team fared well at the Colorado Swimming Pioneer Open, held Dec. 2-4 at the University of Denver.

Lauren Fetzko led the way for the Glenwood Springs-based squad, swimming to six top-10 showings. She won the 11- and 12-year-old girls 500-yard freestyle in 5 minutes, 31.37 seconds. She finished seventh in both the 50 free (26.91) and 200 free (2:06.6), ninth in the 50 breaststroke (35.93) and 10th in both the 100 free (59.05) and the 100 butterfly (1:05.35).

Phillip Hecksel scored a pair of top-10 finishes in the 11-12 boys age division. He sped to sixth in the 50 butterfly (30.07) and ninth in the 50 backstroke (32.23).

In 10-and-under girls competition, Kaitlyn Vanderhoof placed ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:31.87).

“For our team overall, it was a very satisfying meet,” Garrison said. “Many athletes had breakthrough performances.”

More than 1,200 swimmers competed at the meet, which serves as the winter championship meet for the state. It’s also open to teams from outside Colorado.
