FORT COLLINS ” Eaton outscored Coal Ridge 20-6 in the third quarter and ran away with a 65-45 win in Thursday’s Class 3A boys basketball state quarterfinal at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.

Sparked by two late 3-pointers by Eric Schmitz, including one from probably 30 feet out, Coal Ridge had surged back from a six-point deficit to head into halftime tied at 28.

But the Reds, who won a state title in 2007, blew the game wide open in the second half.

Eaton will face defending state champion Faith Christian in the semifinals Friday night at 7 p.m. Coal Ridge takes on Aspen at 11:45 a.m. in Friday’s consolation semifinals.
