GRAND JUNCTION – Little League tournament baseball is more than runs, hits and errors. It’s also about getting accustomed to new teammates and better athletic skills.Major boys coach Eric Gross didn’t use that as an excuse for Three Rivers’ 4-3 loss to Monument Tuesday. Instead, Gross mentioned the ongoing process of the players becoming used to each other as part of the problem.”The pitching performances were solid at both ends. We had difficulty controlling the baseball,” he said. “You have to remember when you have kids throwing the ball 70 miles an hour from 46 feet, it’s not just a problem for the batter. It’s also a problem for the catcher, and all these catchers and pitchers have not worked together and they’re on a new team with each other.”Monument converted a wild pitch in the fourth inning into the winning run that put previously unbeaten Three Rivers into a must-win or face-elimination game at 5:30 p.m. today with host Grand Mesa.Ty Burtard, the game’s winning pitcher, raced home when Three Rivers’ pitcher John Nieslanik’s fast ball got by catcher Tanner Nieslanik. After giving up a pair of game-tying runs in the third, Burtard got stingy. In the next three innings he didn’t allow a hit, finishing with nine strikeouts.
