Three Rivers plays today for shot at state Little League championship

WINTER PARK — David Reilly hit a double in the bottom of the sixth and final inning to drive in the game-tying and game winning runs for the Three Rivers Little League Majors All-Star baseball team on Sunday, helping his team beat Academy Little League of Colorado Springs 9-8 on the Colorado Little League state tournament.

Reilly’s double drove in Luke Morrisey with the tying run, and Joey Beveridge came across the plate to score the winning run and cap the walk-off victory.

The victory for Three Rivers kept the team of players from Glenwood Springs, Basalt, Eagle and Aspen alive in the double elimination state tournament. It set up a rematch with Boulder North, which defeated Three Rivers 16-4 on Saturday to send the local team into Sunday’s elimination game.

Game time is set for 10 a.m. today. Three Rivers must win the 10 a.m. game, followed immediately by another game against Boulder North, to win the state title.

“We have our work cut out for us,” Three Rivers coach Scott Houston said. “But these kids never gave up.”

Academy led 6-2 after four innings before Three Rivers rallied.

Sam Fitzwilliams finished with two hits and four RBIs, including a two-run home run as part of Three Rivers’ comeback. Jake Ticer added three base hits and Beveridge added a pair of hits in the come-from-behind effort. Coach Scott Houston added that the relief pitching of Sam Richie and Cole Houston, along with a pair of double plays on defense by Three Rivers, helped keep Academy within striking distance.
