Three Rivers set for District Tournament

The defending District 1 champion Three Rivers All-Stars baseball team begins its title defense Monday, but it won’t have the advantage of playing on its home field this year.

Three Rivers – made up of 13- and 14-year-old boys from Basalt, El Jebel, Carbondale and Glenwood Springs – travels to Cortez for the District 1 Little League Tournament starting Monday.

The All-Stars won the tournament last year at El Jebel and should have a good shot at repeating this season, according to head coach Dan Chicoine.

“I think the kids have worked really hard preparing themselves for this tournament,” Chicoine said. “We’ve got some really good kids from up and down the valley. They’ve played well and gelled together well as a team.”

And Three Rivers should have some momentum heading into the District tourney. A number of the Three Rivers players played for the Glenwood All-Stars, which swept the Grand Junction Bombers in its Western Colorado Baseball Association season finale last weekend.

Along with Chicoine, Jeff Jensen, Mike Summers and Steve Kinney are assistant coaches for the squad this year.

Beau Chicoine and Zach Zerbato are the team’s aces on the mound, and Beau Chicoine is also one of the team’s top hitters.

Three Rivers opens the tournament on Monday at 5:30 p.m. against Monument in Cortez. The winner of the District tournament advances to the State Tournament in Fraser on July 19.
