Three Rivers softball team drops into elimination game

SANTE FE, N.M. — Nayeli Olivas finished 2-for-2 batting with a double and an RBI for the Three Rivers Little League Junior softball team on Friday, but host-team Sante Fe used a pair of big innings early in the game to take control in a 17-7 victory on the first day of the Junior League Softball Southwest Regional.

The game was called at the end of fifth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Olivas, who hails from Glenwood Springs, was the only member of the Three Rivers squad to finish with two hits. Also batting safely during the game was Arianna Pena (1 for 2 with a triple), Samantha Arnold (1 for 1 with a double and an RBI), and Savanna Vasquez (1 for 2).

Caroline Paxon and Vasquez combined to pitched the first three innings when Sante Fe jumped on Three Rivers with 14 runs. Shayden Jones relieved for the final two innings and allowed three runs.

With the loss, Three Rivers dropped into an elimination game of the double-elimination tournament. The Juniors will play against the state champions from Arkansas, who dropped into the elimination bracket following their 18-4 loss against East Texas in another first-round game. Game time is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Bicentennial Park.
