Tiernan, Shepard prevail at 22nd Turkey Day 5K in Glenwood Springs

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado ” Cool temperatures and light snow greeted a record field of more than 400 runners and walkers at the Glenwood Springs Golf Club for the 22nd running of the Turkey Day 5K.
Alex Tiernan bested a strong field, coming across the finish line in 16 minutes and 9 seconds for the overall victory. Former Glenwood High School cross country and track standout Marco Salmen was second in a time of 16:25.
Never far from the top, local running icon Bernie Boettcher rounded out the top three at this annual Thanksgiving gathering with a time of 16:46. Charlie Wertheim, another local who rarely misses a chance to get out and test his fitness, ran a nice 17:07 for fourth place overall.
On the women’s side of the ledger, Sarah Shepard and Megan Lund renewed an old rivalry by going head to head in the valley’s biggest race of the season.
Shepard managed to edge out Lund for the title by clocking a new course record of 18:03. Lund was right on her heels with an 18:18 posting.
Both ladies have been fixtures in the local running scene for years. Sue Jacobson was third among the ladies field with a time of 20:55.
Race directors Karen Greenwood and Jim Richmond couldn’t have been happier with the morning’s turnout of fitness supporters.
The day was topped off by the annual blessing given by Jack Green and Bob Willey, which sent everyone off with families and friends to kick off the holiday season.
