Titan girls take down Yuma, Buena Vista slips past Cardinals

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado ” Coal Ridge’s girls basketball team are a win away from making Class 3A’s final eight by beating Yuma 48-36 in the first round of the 3A state playoffs on Friday.

The Titans (17-6) will face regional round host St. Mary’s today at 1 p.m. with a March 12-14 trip Colorado State University on the line. There, the final eight teams in 3A will duke it out for a state title.

BUENA VISTA, Colorado ” Erin Vanderpool scored 13 points as Grand Valley’s girls basketball team gave Buena Vista a scare in the first round of the 3A state playoffs in Buena Vista on Friday.

The Cardinals (11-12) trailed Buena Vista (22-1) by just three points with 33 seconds to go before watching the game slip away.

“I’m proud of the girls,” Grand Valley coach Mike Johnson said. “A No. 1 seed is supposed to kill a No. 8 seed, and that didn’t happen.”

Shawnee Young added six points for the Cardinals, who finished as the runners-up in Class 2A last season.

Buena Vista will face Machebeuf in today’s round of 16.
