Titans cheerleading places second in state
Competing at the annual CHSAA State Spirit Competition in Denver, the Coal Ridge Titans cheerleading team came away with a second place finish in a strong showing under head coach Alyssa Thurmon.
Dating back to 2012, the Titans cheerleading squad has improved each year, building off of a 16th-place finish in 2012, which happened to be Thurmon’s first year at the helm.
From there, the Titans made a leap to eighth in 2014 before placing second this year, making their first appearance in the finals.
On the first day of competition, Friday, the Titans scored a 75.88 with a one-point deduction for a fall, which was good enough to push them into their first finals appearance.
In the finals, the Titans came out a little shaky, according to Thurmon, due to the big stage. The nerves led to a dropped stunt, resulting in two deducted points for the Titans, who scored a 67.5 overall in the final round.
Coal Ridge finished just behind University, who won the state title in 3A. Despite coming up just short, the Titans exceeded expectations this year.
“Our goal this year was to make top four,” Thurmon said. “This team has worked extremely hard, sometimes practicing at 5:30 a.m. We have an amazing group of dedicated and hard-working girls who never gave up on our goal of making top four.”
Members of the team include the following: Chelsea Gosnell, KateLee Ross-Biorn, Kellsea Ross-Biorn, Kyleah Ross-Biorn, Aylin Mendoza, Kylie Crawford, Tori Easley, Codie Fisher, Jaycelyn Krueger, Mary-Ann Fulton, Katelynn McElroy, Bella Miller, Angelina Vasquez, Gracie West, Lacey Peterson, Zyanni Vandorren, Annikya Wight, Hannah Marx, Britney Moreno
Individually, Gosnell received the Al-Elite Athlete Award. One girl from each team making the finals received this award, according to Thurmon.
