Titans down Grand Valley in thriller

PARACHUTE ” When the game is hanging in the balance with only seconds to go, second chances don’t come around too often.

Coal Ridge got one of those second chances on Tuesday against Grand Valley and it took advantage of it. After a Skyler James turn-around jumper that put Coal Ridge up 57-56 was nullified because Coal Ridge head coach Brian Blair called a timeout before he got the shot off, Andy Smedra grabbed a rebound and put it back in to set the score back to 57-56.

With 8.3 seconds left, Grand Valley tried to hit a game-winner of its own, but a Tyler Jensen layup didn’t fall and the Titans got the non-league win.

The Cardinals, the Class 2A defending state champions, led by as many as 12 in the third quarter, but the Titans (3A) battled back behind James, who finished the game with 21 points.

“He played real hard and I think he had some motivation,” Blair said of James, who lives in Parachute and almost went to Grand Valley.

Smedra finished with 12 points for Coal Ridge, while Jensen led the Cards with 17.

Coal Ridge (8-4 WSL, 12-5 overall) will finish its regular season this weekend, when it will travel to Roaring Fork on Friday and then Gunnison on Saturday.

The loss concluded Grand Valley’s regular season and now the 16-2 Cardinals (7-0 WSL) can look ahead to the first round of the 2A District Tournament on Saturday.
