COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado ” Although a state meet berth didn’t result from Coal Ridge’s trip to Saturday’s 3A Region A tournament, the Titans walked off the court knowing they left quite a season in their wake.

Coal Ridge put up a 1-2 record, third among a four-team region field, at Colorado Springs Christian High School to finish a milestone season at 20-5 overall.

The Titans dropped a morning match to Eaton in five games, lost to four-time defending state champion CSC in three and beat Monte Vista in four to finish off the day.

CSC and Eaton nabbed the region’s two spots at state, which is scheduled for Nov. 7-8 at the Denver Coliseum.

Coal Ridge’s 2008 efforts made for the best season in the fourth-year school’s history. The Titans not only won 20 games, but captured the 3A Western Slope League with a 16-0 league record and advanced to regionals for the first time in program history.

“The girls were happy,” Coal Ridge coach Denise Greene said. “They were bummed not to go on but pleased with the season.”

Greene bid farewell to a group of seven seniors ” Chloe Nelson, Kelly Romero, Sierra Grove, Brittany Smith, Britney Smith, Kaitlin Moeller and Jessica Needham ” who helped the school grow the volleyball program from scratch.

Said Greene: “They’re definitely going to be missed.”
