Triebel named to weekly student-athlete spotlight

Mike Triebel looks at his high school football career in Glenwood Springs as four years of fun.

“I’ve always loved it. Football’s the only sport I really like and it means a lot to me,” said Triebel of his years in a Demon uniform.

The senior lineman’s been a member of Glenwood teams that have experienced the growing pains of rebuilding from a JV-only sport back to respectability.

Treibel and teammates showed their toughness in last week’s Rifle game.

At intermission, Glenwood had battled Rifle to a 7-7 tie, and stopped the Bears from scoring from the 1-yard line.

Triebel said that was one of many highlights he had of the now-concluded season.

“Our run defense is pretty tough, and everyone knew we could do it,” Triebel said of the team’s goal-line stand.

“I think (Anthony) Alfini ran inside, and Chase Warner made the stop. It was pretty cool,” recalled Treibel.

Rifle rebounded after halftime for a 40-23 victory.

But the loss, Triebel said, didn’t diminish what the Demons accomplished this year.

One of the highs of Triebel’s career was the team’s homecoming victory over Montezuma-Cortez.

“It was big, because we haven’t won it in so long,” Trieble said of the Demons’ 10-0 victory over the Panthers, which broke a 12-year losing streak in homecoming games.

Triebel hopes to extend his football career into college. He’s contacted Mesa State and Western State College, and plans to send game tapes to both schools.
