Two area prep teams open state playoffs with road games

Staff Report

The release of the girls first round state playoff schedule has two area teams scrambling for bus transportation.

Two of the three area girls teams which advanced to the state playoffs will be on the road for their first-round games.

Rifle (10-4-2), which posted a 5-1 victory against Brighton on Saturday, is seeded 16th in the 16-team single elimination Class 4A state tournament and will play No. 1 Mullen (12-3) in Denver.

Likewise, Roaring Fork (6-7-1) is the No. 16 seed in the Class 3A state playoffs and will play No. 1 Kent Denver (11-2-2) out of the Metropolitan League in Denver. The Rams advanced to the state playoffs on a 9-0 win over Bayfield last Friday.

Basalt (11-2-1), the area’s other 3A playoff team, has earned the No. 5 seed and opens the state playoffs at home with No. 12 Ridgway/Ouray (11-0-1) from the Mountain League.

The Longhorns earned a regional round bye and did not play last week.

According to CHSAA, all first-round playoff games must be played by May 10. Dates and times for all playoff games will be announced later this week.

In other games involving Western Slope teams last weekend Longmont defeated Steamboat, 3-1, and Eagle Valley downed Buena Vista, 2-0.
