Walters wins at Black Canyon in playoff over Smith

Competing at the Black Canyon Tournament on Wednesday in Montrose, Rifle junior Elly Walters topped fellow Bear, sophomore Masi Smith, in the second playoff hole to take the individual title.

Walters and Smith both finished with a 78 through 18 holes before then battling through two playoffs holes, where Walters came through with the win over Smith.

As a team, Rifle won for the second straight day, turning in a team score of 249 to win by 33 strokes over Montrose (282). Durango finished third with a team round of 302.

Along with Walters and Smith, Montrose’s Nichole Cherry finished third overall with a round of 90, while Rifle’s Savannah Seay turned in a round of 93 to finish fourth.

Montrose’s Taylor Kettell rounded out the top five with a round of 95.

Outside of the Rifle trio of Walters, Smith and Seay, Isabel Feichter shot a round of 97 for the Bears, while Jacey Hauer shot a round of 102 at Black Canyon Golf Course in Montrose.
