Weber’s hot hand downs Glenwood

Hard work, solid defense, rebounding – it can all be for not when facing a hot hand on the basketball court.

And the Glenwood Springs girls’ basketball team certainly ran up against a hot hand Friday in Steamboat Springs’ Jen Weber.

Weber tallied five treys and 22 points to lead the Sailors to a 57-46 Class 4A Western Slope League victory at Chavez-Spencer Gymnasium.

Weber launched a trio of three-pointers and another long field goal as part of a 16-4 run to open the game from which the Demons would never recover.

Although, trailing by 14 after the first quarter and by as many as 20 in the second quarter, Glenwood did manage to make a game of it down the stretch.

Glenwood forwards took over the game for a time in the third quarter.

The Demons went on a 13-1 run in the third, thanks in large part to 10 consecutive Glenwood points by the duo of Amber Sutherland, who had a team high 12 points, and Jeri Polowchena to pull within seven points, 43-37, near the end of the third quarter.

“Jeri had a great game and Sutherland had a great game,”Glenwood coach Deb Henderson said. “They stepped up and rebounded hard and were really taking it to the hole.”

Glenwood continued to rally in the fourth quarter, as Megan McKinnie brought the score to 50-46 after a steal and layup with 2 minutes, 22 seconds left. McKinnie finished with 10 points in the contest.

“We had 24 offensive rebounds against a team bigger than us,” Henderson said of her team’s play. “We were still having fun and not giving up.

“They came out in the third and lit it up,” she added. “If we can play hard like that coming out in a game, there’s not many teams that can contend with us.”

But the game ended like it began – with Weber in control.

Weber hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute to ensure the Sailors a victory for the long ride home.
