Weller scores a pair of first-half goals in victory

PALISADE – The Glenwood Springs boys’ soccer team rolled to a 3-1 victory over Palisade in its opening Western Slope League game Thursday at Dixson Field.

Glenwood improves to 4-1 overall (1-0 in 4A Western Slope League).

The Demons posted all three goals in the first half, two of which came off the foot of Derek Weller.

“It’s about what is expected of him, especially when we’re missing Ross (Smith),” Glenwood head coach Bob Guska said of Weller. “He’s probably one of the fastest wingers in the conference. … We’re getting good output our of different players, so that’s a good sign.”

Smith, the Demons’ leading scorer, missed Thursday’s game due to illness. Glenwood also had second-string goalie Marcus Bernier in net. Bernier had a strong game with 13 saves.

“The defense played very well and the goalie played well and the offense was clicking as much as it needed to,” Guska said.

Weller opened the scoring in the 17th minute with an assist from Ian Lochhead. Eight minutes later Weller notched his second of the game with an assist from Victor Osorio. Lochhead sealed the contest with a penalty-kick goal in the 33rd minute.

Cody Pope accounted for Palisade’s only goal in the 67th minute.

The Demons play at Moffat County Saturday in another Western Slope League contest.

In junior varsity action, Glenwood defeated Palisade 3-1.
