Wildcats edge Bears

RIFLE ” Daven Harmeling notched a game-high 21 points to help Class 5A Fruita Monument get by 4A Rifle 59-56 in a nonleague basketball game here Tuesday night.

Rifle (3-5) led by three points after the first quarter, but the Wildcats bounced back to take a one-point edge into the halftime intermission.

Fruita (3-6) upped its advantage to four points at the end of a high-scoring third quarter, outshooting the Bears 22-19 in the stanza.



Harmeling, who signed with Washington State University in November, paced a trio of Wildcat players in double figures. Riar Greer posted 16 points and Shawn Hansow had 10.

Jim Owens led the Bears with 20 points. Travis Jensen added 10 and Stuart Stapleton finished with nine points.



On Friday, Rifle travels to Steamboat Springs for a girls-boys varsity doubleheader, then concludes this week’s action at home Saturday against Moffat County.
