Would you want your favorite baseball player in the WBC?

The WBC reminds me of the Olympics in some ways ” especially the classic basketball and hockey confrontations in the “pre-professional” days when our college players would take on the veteran Soviet teams.

When the U.S. began to lose to “pro” teams from Argentina and European hotbeds, our Olympic Committee panicked and the result was “The Dream Team” of Magic and Michael that drubbed everyone on the way to a gold medal.

Somehow, that and the subsequent “Redeem Team” didn’t quite capture the spirit of say, “The Miracle on Ice” when the U.S. upset the invincible Soviets in the hockey semifinals of 1980.

So, to get back to the question: would I want my favorite player in the baseball classic games? I enjoyed watching the Dodgers’ Russell Martin double and homer for the Canadian team against the U.S. last weekend, but I admit, I’m glad he’s DH-ing and not catching.

And I think I really preferred getting to know the “amateurs” and finding favorites among them (as when Tommy Lasorda won Olympic gold with a collection of young minor leaguers) on those long-ago Olympic teams to hoping the professionals live up to their reputations.
