Wrestlers, swimmers headed to state
And the list of area prep athletes qualifying to state championship events this weekend just keeps growing. Grand Valley wrestler Matt Cain advanced to the Class 2A, 130-pound state tournament on a late victory in Saturday’s regionals, held at Fruita Monument High School.By earning his way to the three-day tournament, which starts Thursday morning at the Pepsi Center in Denver, a total of nine wrestlers, representing three area high schools, are set for action.Cain, a sophomore, has drawn Chris Holworth of Fowler for his first state tournament opponent. Cody Miles, a two-time 2A state qualifier, opens against Holly’s Dustin Bohlander in the 140-pound bracket. Grand Valley senior Justin Busch, puts his 33-5 win-loss record up for grabs against Calvin Denbo of Akron in a first-round 145-pound match.Two area wrestlers have qualified in the Class 4A, 112-pound bracket.Regional champ James Conrardy of Rifle (28-6) hooks up with Alameda junior Corey Valle (24-10) in the first round. Glenwood Springs sophomore Blake Newby (27-14), in his first state tournament, matches up with Aron Baiterria (35-1) of Westminster.Luke Wooten (30-2), from Rifle, is the defending 2005, 130-pound 4A state champion, and begins his pursuit for a second title against Sand Creek’s Manual Martinez (12-14).The rest of the first-round matches involving area wrestlers has Rifle’s Derek Fruetel (27-11) pairing off with Liberty sophomore Brandon Martz. Regional runners-up Tim Long (33-6) and Tyler Thompson (25-8) open the 152 and 160 brackets against Chris McWhorter from Pueblo South and Kohl Martin of Windsor, respectively.Glenwood Springs has swimmers scheduled in eight events of the Class 4A swim championships in Fort Collins where the Demons have qualified in three relays and five individual events.The preliminary round of the 4A meet starts Friday.The Demons have teams in 200 and 400-yard free relays and 200 medley relay. Individually, sophomore Ali Schaiberger has qualified in the 200 and 500 freestyles. Emily McDonald, Sierra Grove and Jennifer Betts are scheduled to line up in the 500 and 100 free prelims.Junior Claire Noone has qualified in the 100-yard breaststroke.
