Wrestlers take 6th, Cardinals sweep
GYPSUM ” Basalt continues to move its way up the prep wrestling scale.
Competing at the Eagle Valley Tournament the Longhorns finished in a 6th-place tie with Buena Vista in Saturday’s 15-team tournament.
Matt Aten, a junior at Glenwood Springs High School, finished as the tournament’s 140-pound runner-up.
Aten reached the weight’s championship match by pinning three straight opponents before losing to Arvada’s Nick Bushman in 37 seconds.
Garrett Jammaron, wrestling at 189, took third place and Mike Buster reached the 215-pound consolation final. Chris Black went 3-2 in the 135-pound division and Longhorn heavyweight Mike Zerfoss concluded the tournament in fifth place with a 2-2 record.
Both the Grand Valley boys and girls basketball teams concluded play with victories over Soroco and Telluride.
Holly Steltzlen scored a team-high 15 points to lead the Cardinals to a 45-30 win over on Friday, and netted 14 in Saturday’s 42-36 victory at Telluride.
The wins boosted Grand Valley’s record to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the Class 2A Western Slope League.
Freshman Sam McKinley scored 13 of his game-high 22 points in the first quarter to give the Cardinals a lead of as many as 15.
By the fourth period, the Rams reduced Grand Valley’s lead to three points before Colin Lauman turned the tide with a field goal. Chris Johnson’s free throws sealed the 58-53 win.
The following afternoon at Telluride, Johnson scored 14 points in a 63-48 win.
The victories upped the Cards’ record to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in league.
League wins over Olathe and Gunnison raised the Basalt boys’ record to 2-4 overall and 2-0 in the Class 3A Western Slope League.
The Longhorns coasted to a 62-50 victory at Olathe Friday, and pinned a 48-42 defeat on Gunnison Saturday.
Against Gunnison, Cody Burkholder led all scorers with 14 points.
The Longhorn girls maintained first place in the WSL, and moved to 3-0 in league (6-2 overall) on victories against Olathe and Gunnison.
Three Basalt players, led by Brittany Pollock with 13 points, finished in double figures in Friday’s 53-31 win. Lauren Redfern and Deanne Spracher scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, in a 53-19 rout of Gunnison on Saturday.
