WSL volleyball: Rifle falls in first two volleyball matches; Coal Ridge wins twice

GRAND JUNCTION – Rifle High School’s volleyball team fell to the Gunnison Cowboys, 25-21, 25-14, 25-7, and the Cedaridge Bruins, 25-23, 25-19, 25-17, in the Bears’ first matchups of the Class 3A Western Slope League tournament on Friday at Grand Junction Central High School.

“The girls started out really strong, and then things started to fall apart for them,” coach Erin Reider said.

Jordan Cody and Katelyn Shanahan chipped in four kills in the match against the Cowboys. Ksan Breuckmann had 11 digs, and Sarah McCutchan three service aces.



Cody led the team against the Bruins with 11 kills, followed by Annie Schmidt with six. Veronica Santoyo added 10 digs for the Rifle, which finished the first day of the tournament 0-2.

In other tournament action involving Garfield County teams, Coal Ridge won both of its matches in the first round of tournament play, beating Moffat County, 25-10, 25-22, 25-15, and Roaring Fork, 25-18, 25-15, 25-24.



Olathe High School scored two victories, winning over Aspen in three sets, 25-14, 25-11, 25-19, and Grand Valley in four, 25-9, 19-25, 25-20, 25-16.

Roaring Fork went 1-1, beating Moffat County, 25-20, 25-15, 25-20, and losing to Coal Ridge.
