Yavapai powers its way to championship

GRAND JUNCTION – Throughout the Junior College World Series, no team has been able to figure out how to halt the potent Yavapai offense. On Friday, it was Walters State’s turn to feel the wrath of the Roughriders torrid hitting attack.Sophomore Milton Loo blasted a Lance McClain pitch over the left centerfield fence with the bases loaded as the highlight of Yavapai’s five-run fourth inning to coast to a 9-0 win. The game was stopped in the seventh due to the mercy rule in front of 11,111 at Suplizio Field.In five tournament games, the Roughriders (4-1 tournament) have outscored their opponents 53-19 and hit 13 home runs. The victory forces a second game between the two teams with the national championship on the line.Walters State (4-1), unbeaten in tournament play prior to Friday’s game, never had a chance to retaliate. Yavaipi starter J.R. Murphy collared the Senators, limiting them to five hits in seven innings.The sophomore right-hander finished with five strikeouts and never allowed a Walters State hitter to get beyond third base. Yavaipi extended its lead on a two-run single from infielder Mike Roskoph in the fourth, then added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings – the last tally on a homer by freshman Dustin Kaats.McClain took the loss for the Senators, allowing seven earned runs in three and one-thirds innings pitched.
